'mountaineering' is an automatic skill that works when in mountainous or hilly areas. A player with this skill may be able to go places that others cannot, and will generally not be so exhausted from difficult climbs. It also becomes less tiring to gather raw materials in highlands when well-versed in the skill.
If you know mountaineering, you will be slightly more effective when hiding in highland terrains.
