; Usage : tactics - Display known tactics

As warriors advance through their training, they may begin to notice certain
moves and combinations of attacks that work better than others. These
skills allow formal training in how to develop and use those combinations,
to make individual fighting styles more specialized and refined.

After learning the 'battle tactics' skill, warriors will begin to develop
their attack combinations. New combinations are usually discovered once a fighter leaves a battle, when he has time to think and analyze what just happened.

Mechanics
After learning the skill try to use different skills during battle and after the fight is over you may get a notification that you learned a combo. Executing tactics low will show you a screen like this:

Showing you that you know the two middle skills in the 4 part combo. Note that for players with blind mode enabled the display uses the letter x for (missing) skills in the combo to make it easier to read with a screen reader.

Details
* The minimum combo length is 3
* The maximum combo length is 8
* You won't get the same skill twice in a row
* You won't get the same skill twice separated by another skill
* Some skills, such as charge and backstab, start combat and can only be used at the start of a combination
* Some skills, such as disarm and berserk, will only appear once in a combination
* As your tactics skills improve, you will unlock longer combinations
* Skills must be successfully performed to learn new moves in a combination
* Not all skills need to be successfully performed to complete a combination - for example, a failed leap may still trigger the combination
* The maximum combo length for low tactics is 7
* The maximum combo length for advanced tactics is 8
* The maximum combo length for cross-class tactics is 8
* The initial number of low tactics is 9
* The initial number of discoverable advanced tactics is 18
* The initial number of discoverable cross-class tactics is 15
* You can get one length 8 combo consisting of advanced tactics and two in cross-class tactics for a maximum total of three 8 length combos.
* There is an achievement for discovering 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 patterns respectively.
* There is an achievement for successfully executing 6, 7 and 8 length pattern respectively.

Eligible Skills
Battle Tactics
These skills can appear in 'tactics low' combos:
* Thrust
* Taunt
* Charge (start of combo only)
* Leap
* Lunge
* Kick
* Bash
* Riposte
* Feint
* Stomp
* Pommel Strike
* Jab

Warrior skills added in 2015:-
* knockback

Advanced Tactics
These skills can appear in 'tactics advanced' combos, along with the above skills:
* Intimidate (Note: you must specifically target a mob. intimidating a room does not trigger or help to complete the combo, even if mobs are intimidated by it.)
* Disarm (only appears once)
* Berserk (only appears once)
* Whirlwind
* Cleave

Warrior skills added in 2015:-
* ground strike

Cross-Class Tactics
These skills can appear in 'tactics cross' combos, along with the above skills:
* Trip
* backstab (start of combo only)
* Bloodletting Stab
* Dirt Throwing
* Shadow Bind
* Shadow Strike
* Knife Throwing

Bonuses
When executing combos you get bonuses for executing long chains which temporarily boost the following stats. The bonuses can stack:
* Attacks
* Armor
* Strength
* Dexterity
* Parry
* Hitroll
* Damroll
* Dodge
* Warrior Skill Level

Extra Bonuses
When you receive an extra bonus, you get the extra bonus in addition to one of the bonuses above.
Any movement or hitpoints received boost your current stats only.
You can receive more than one extra bonus at a time.
* Movement
* Hit points
* morale
In addition to the stat bonuses you also receive some experience, making executing combos worthwhile most of the time.

Hints
You pretty much only learn new parts of combinations by doing them in groups of three. For example, if you have a piece of a combination that uses kick then riposte, you'll want to try patterns like "bash kick rip bash". This will check for two groups of three at the same time - The first part of the pattern will check for "bash kick rip", and the second part will check for "kick rip bash". Obviously this would only be useful if you're trying to work out a pattern that has unknown (missing) skills both before and after the known skills.

Changes
During Advent 2015, some changes were made to battle tactics:- knockback and ground strike were added to the
eligible pattern skills, and two new skills improvise tactic and create tactic were created, as part of the level 37 expansion.

In Febuary 2017 battle tactics were changed to allow combo attacks to have both ground strike and jab in them and to prevent combo attacks with ground strike from having various thief skills in them.

Pattern creation skills
Improvise tactic
Improvise tactic allows the creation of temporary battle tactics. Depending on how well the skill is known and the length of the pattern, a number of skills can be choosen, with the rest the skills been randomized e.g. when the skill is learnt to 84%: length 3-5 allows for 1 specified skill, length 6-7 allows for up to 2 specified skills, and length 8 allows for up to 3 specified skills.

Syntax:
tactic improvise <length> <skillnames> [-force]

Each creation attempt use 200 movement. Omitting the force flag simulates the output without actually creating anything. The newly created patterns can be viewed by typing tactic all

example: tactic impro 8 leap charge lunge -f

Create tactic
Create tactic allows the creation of a new permanent battle tactic, by spending one practice.

Levels in the Cleric class give moderate hitpoints, mana, and movement. They are able to cast
many protective spells, heal the injured, resurrect the dead, curse and hinder enemies, and
have a great many utility spells and skills to assist others and allow groups to run smoothly.
As a result of this balanced nature, clerics are not generally considered heavy melee fighters
or spell blasters. They are easily the most powerful support class, and dedicated clerics are
often found in groups.

There are several common cleric play styles:

* Cleric melee, with a focus on protective spells such as Faith Shield and Sanctuary, cursing spells such as Faerie Fire and Weaken, using melee weapons and attacks as the primary method of dealing damage.

* Cleric healer, using Heal, Refresh, Resurrect, and other spells in groups.

* Cleric curser, using curses such as Weaken and Lethargy to hinder enemies when grouped.

* Undead Turner, using the Turn Undead and other undead skills to manage undead. These cleric skills can also be used very effectively in tandem with necromancer skills.

The primary stat for clerics is wisdom, as most cleric spells require higher wisdom than intelligence to learn and cast.

Occasionally in the course of advising new players, mudmails or emails are written that contain a lot of useful information. This page is intended to be an archive for those kinds of letters.

To a level 24 warrior mage
At your level, mobs actually do quite a bit of damage. Your goal
should first be to make things dead as quickly as possible, and
secondly to protect yourself with armor. Your equipment looks
pretty good, and the only real recommendation I have there is to
make sure you have a one handed weapon.

The reason for the one handed weapon is so that you can use jab,
but also so you can use the 'burning hands' and 'shocking grasp'
spells. Remember, you're a warrior primary, but you're also a
high level mage - using those two spells will do a LOT of damage,
and casting them before battle gives you an awesome opening move.
You'll also probably need to use a one handed weapon for some of
your combat tactics.

Regarding dodge and parry, it's important to have those maxxed.
You probably aren't seeing them because Mush-Z has filtered them
out, but you definitely get hit less often when using those two
skills.

Two things I did notice is that you haven't learned either 'cry
of victory' or 'second wind'. Second wind basically gives you
free movement when you use it, which can help you when you're low
on movement in a fight or when you need to regen quickly.

Cry of victory can be used almost every time you kill something,
and will give you back some hitpoints and movement. This really
reduces how much you have to heal yourself once you get used to
using it.

Lastly, it looks like you know the 'combat tactics' skill, but
you haven't been trying to use them or learn any new ones. Battle
tactics are really, really powerful - when you complete one while
fighting, you get bonuses ranging from massively boosted strength
and armor up to extra hitpoints and movement. They can help you
kill things, but will also keep you from needing to heal yourself
as often.

For more information on battle tactics, take a look at the Alter
Aeon Wiki page, at: Battle Tactics

Good luck!
Dentinhttp://wiki.alteraeon.com/index.php?title=Warrior&diff=1922Warrior2014-01-26T16:56:53Z
Dentin: /* Helpful Guides */

Warrior classes have excellent hitpoints and poor mana. They are practiced
with weapons, and have the strongest parry of all classes.

A warrior is basically trained to kill stuff. Almost all warrior skills are
oriented towards killing an enemy. If you are a newbie, a warrior with
minimal spellcasting ability is a pretty good combination.

Warriors rely on a high constitution and strength, with dexterity thrown in
for good measure. Constitution gives them the high hitpoints needed in
battle, while strength and dexterity are needed to master various skills.

The Haunted Hills is the region to the west of the Haunted Highway on the Island of Kordan. The Highway runs north and south from the center of the island to the city of New Thalos.

The hills are considered haunted due to many reports of spectres and ghosts over the years. The hills are also home to a number of extremely old burial grounds and tombs, and there is an unknown system of protective wards and curses on the region. The townspeople and most explorers avoid it, viewing it as more hassle than it's worth, and the age of the tombs make it likely that raiders have already plundered most of the available treasure.

In recent years, the haunting seems to have spread, with ethereal undead being frequently seen on the highway. This is why the Haunted Highway acquired its name.

Quests
There are three quests available in the area. The main quest line involves breaking the curse on the hills, and there are many hints scattered about the tombs which reveal the history of the hills and the reasons behind its protections and wards. There is are also quite a few treasure items, making it worthwhile to explore every tomb.

The other two quests involve the Winter Wolf, which resides in a cave in the hills. It's difficult to describe the location, so your best option is to just wander around and look for it. When you're in the place, you'll see this:

A dark space in the underbrush looks like it might be a cave entrance.
The quest givers for the Winter Wolf quests are in Indira, with Pegad giving one, and Beliana giving the other.
Dentinhttp://wiki.alteraeon.com/index.php?title=Qoorik%27s_Underground_Lair&diff=1486Qoorik's Underground Lair2013-05-17T17:25:38Z
Dentin: create page, import advice from external email

Qoorik's Underground Lair is located in the Caves of Mendelius, and in fact the entire cave system has effectively become the lair. The caves, originally owned by a rich recluse, were taken over by Qoorik and his associates and are currently being used as a base of operations.

While the caves are now controlled by Qoorik, the demon is only unlocked by completing a large chain of quests. Qoorik is a fairly difficult boss, and new players often have difficulty defeating him.

Advice For Defeating Qoorik
One of the more difficult class combinations to use against Qoorik is mage/cleric primary and secondary, with low thief, warrior, and necromancer levels. This combination doesn't have a lot of hitpoints, and it's important to reduce damage taken and do a lot of offensive damage simultaneously.

Some advice for this mage/cleric class combination:

- The best tactics are probably full cleric protection, charge spells, and lightning bolt.

- Make sure you have sanctuary and faith shield protecting you. Don't worry so much about armor, as it's unlikely to help, but faith shield and sanctuary will probably cut the overall damage in half.

- Find a potion of 'protection from evil', or cast the spell on yourself. This should also help reduce damage. For really evil creatures, protection from evil can cut damage nearly in half.

- Remove your held item or your shield, and use the 'burning hands' and 'shocking grasp' spells. Cast these just before you start combat, so that your first strike will discharge them immediately. Remember to always, always wield a weapon! Never give up a weapon over a shield or held item.

- Qoorik is somewhat resistant to both fire and ice, so it's best to use lightning as your main weapon against him. Try casting lightning bolt and shocking grasp over and over again in a loop. If you already have shocking grasp cast, the game won't recast it and will quickly go to the next spell. This should allow you to hit him with lightning bolt over and over until the shocking grasp discharges.

- It might help to add burning hands in there as well, just because the charge spells are so powerful. Even though he's resistant to fire, you might do more damage that way. Try this if lightning bolt and shocking grasp aren't quite enough.
Dentinhttp://wiki.alteraeon.com/index.php?title=Global_experience_thwacker&diff=1336Global experience thwacker2013-04-14T21:06:35Z
Dentin: Page create

The "global exp thwacker" is a mud-wide control system which looks for mobs that give out a disproportionate amount of experience compared to other mobs. The highest mobs are gradually dented, reducing the experience they give, to encourage players to find other mobs and/or rotate areas. If the game were perfectly balanced, this thwacker would do virtually nothing, because all creatures would give approximately the same proportion of experience.

The original design of the global experience thwacker was not very good, and by early 2013 it was simply causing disruption instead of helping to balance the game. A large number of changes to correct this, as well as several other long term issues, were added in the first quarter of the year.

What follows below is a post copied from another forum that explains much of the original system and the 2013 changes.

April 14, 2013 Writeup
What is the "global exp thwacker", and why does it exist?

This is a really good question, and the short answer is that this
thwacker is intended to act as a global safety valve, a sanity
check of last resort.

It should be noted that until recently, it was nothing of the
sort. Prior to the recent changes on it, the data collection gave
an amazingly huge bias toward group mob kills. That's been changed,
and the numbers are definitely flattening, which is a good thing.
Ideally, this thwacker should distribute a small amount of exp
dent across a large number of creatures, not focus on a handful of
vnums.

(Trivia point: this thwacker also handles double exp mobs
and double exp areas, for creatures which are seldom touched. That
isn't relevant to this discussion however.)

Some history:

Back in the olden days, there really wasn't any concept of area
checking other than by hand and through player feedback. I started
to notice that a small number of mobs were being pounded into the
ground for experience, pretty much to the detriment of the rest
of the game. Camping mobs for exp was rampant, and I started
collecting numbers to see which mobs were the worst offenders.

This told me which mobs were the problem, but I quickly ran into
issues where builders either refused or would not update the
creatures in question. In a lot of cases, it was difficult to
know how much to change the mob, and I quickly realized that
this was going to be a long term, persistent problem unless it
could be automatically handled in some way.

Enter the thwacker.

The original design goal was to look at the biggest exp mobs on
the game, and slowly lower exp on them until it became more
profitable to run elsewhere. In an ideal world, a balance would
be reached where it would be a matter of tradeoffs, not a matter
of 'this is the best exp mob on the game'. In the real world,
it didn't work that well, but it helped, and it helped a lot.

Later on, a lot of other experience control systems and methods
were added, reducing some of the need for the original thwacker,
but not completely eliminating it. As the other systems came
online, I saw the global thwacker as more of a safety valve than
anything else. When a new area came out, if there were broken
mobs in it, they would quickly go onto the dent list, and over
time they would settle into a long term equilibrium with the rest
of the game over the course of a few months.

Unfortunately, the original thwacker design and algorithm really
wasn't that good, and the way experience changed over the years
was interacting badly with that algorithm:

- The thwacker was penalizing mobs run by large groups very, very
hard. A single, large group of high level players could place a
handful of mobs near the top of the daily hit list in under an hour.

- Very high level players really didn't have very many places they
could go, especially in groups. This severely limited where those
high level players could go, and because high level players
accumulate the most experience the fastest, that handful of good,
high level exp mobs were quickly thwacked into oblivion. About
the only saving grace of this was another poor design decision,
which limited the damage:

- The thwacker's control system used a multipler that ranged
from 100% (full experience) to 20% (one fifth of full experience.)
This meant that undented mobs had to be hit really hard before
anyone would notice, while heavily dented mobs would vary a lot
and rather quickly. As an example, a 5% hit on an undented mob
yields 95% of full experience, but a 5% hit on a 25% mob drops it
to 20%, which lowers the mob from one fourth nominal to one fifth
nominal.

With the latest major changes to the exp system, all three of these
things have been corrected:

- The large group dependency is almost completely gone.

- Other parts of the exp code were changed to reduce the limiters on
high level players and give them many more places to run.

- Work continues to update areas and bring many of them up to a more
unified standard, which also gives high level players more options.

- The global control system now uses a smooth exponential scale for
adjusting experience, instead of the poorly weighted percentage
method. This means that a 5% dent means a 5% dent whether the mob is
at full experience or at one tenth of nominal.

The results of these changes have been pretty clear and pretty obvious.
Virtually none of the previous 'big hitter' mobs are at the top of the
lists, and when they are, it's only for short periods of time, not
day after day. Nearly all of them are slowly gaining back experience
as the control system rebalances; shatjans for example, have gone from
20% exp to 32% since the update, raising their exp by a full 60%.

It will take on the order of 2-3 months before the new setup has
completely adjusted to its new goals, but so far, things are looking
pretty good. With
any luck, the global thwacker will once again be working as intended:
as a limiter of last resort.
Dentinhttp://wiki.alteraeon.com/index.php?title=Multiple_attacks&diff=1198Multiple attacks2013-02-04T23:13:56Z
Dentin: create multiple attacks page, someone needs to template it

The 'multiple attacks' skill is a passive skill that is always in use. It can be best learned by warriors and thieves, and is usually acquired gradually.

The multiple attacks skill increases the number of average attacks you make per round. In addition to training to get higher attacks, there are also certain pieces of equipment that can boost your number of attacks.

Unlike other skills, you may only practice multiple attacks as your level increases. Your thief and warrior levels have the biggest impact, and you should check to see if you can practice multiple attacks after leveling.

Higher attacks are good, as it will give you a much higher rate of attacking during combat.

Note that 'multiple attacks' is the only remaining truly hardcoded skill. It has no skill entry or position in the global skills table, and as a result it cannot be improved through use or via any other mechanism other than the 'practice' command.
Dentinhttp://wiki.alteraeon.com/index.php?title=Battle_Tactics&diff=1193Battle Tactics2013-02-04T18:45:35Z
Dentin: typos/grammatical

skills allow formal training in how to develop and use those combinations,
to make individual fighting styles more specialized and refined.

their attack combinations. New combinations are usually discovered at
the end of a battle when the fighter has time to think and analyze what
just happened.

Mechanics
After learning the skill try to use different skills during battle and after the fight is over you may get a notification that you learned a combo. Executing tactics low will show you a screen like this:
* The maximum combo length for low tactics is 7
* The maximum combo length for advanced tactics is 8
* The maximum combo length for cross-class tactics is 8
* You can get one length 8 combo consisting of advanced tactics and two in cross-class tactics for a maximum total of three 8 length combos

Any movement or hitpoints received boost your current stats only.
You can receive more than one extra bonus at a time.
* Movement
* Hit points

In addition to the stat bonuses you also receive some experience making executing combos worthwhile most of the time.

Hints
You pretty much only learn new parts of combinations by doing them in groups of three. For example, if you've got a piece of a combination that uses kick then riposte, you'll want to try patterns like "bash kick rip bash". This will check for two groups of three at the same time - The first part of the pattern will check for "bash kick rip", and the second part will check for "kick rip bash".

A tick is a unit of time used by the Alter Aeon server to do various housekeeping. Ticks last approximately 29 seconds, and determine when things likes spells run out and areas repop. Each tick advances the in-game time by ten minutes.

Note that tick edges are random, and may range from 15 to 45 seconds, which limits the ability of clients to predict tick edges in advance.

World builders are experienced builders who have created a large number of areas and made a major contribution to the game. They have a higher status than builders, and are allowed to create new builders to assist in their areas, subject to veto by Dentin.

There are currently five world builders:

* Dentin
* Draak
* Gandor
* Morpheus
* Shadowfax

There are really two types of gods: the programmers, builders, and game administrators are one type, and the Pantheon gods are the other type.

In the first group, there are several classes of abilities:

* Game code programmer. Examples are Dentin, Ralithune, and Void.
* Area builders. Area builders typically only have access to their own areas when building. Examples are Grolantor, Kefka, and Ralithune.
* World builders. These are builders with global or multi-area permissions. Examples are Dentin, Draak, Shadowfax, Morpheus, and Gandor.
* System admin. These run and maintain the system server software. This is currently only Dentin.
* Player arbiter. These handle player disputes and other player problems that can't be automatically handled. This is also currently only Dentin.

The second major group are the Pantheon gods. Most of the gods currently in the Pantheon were at one point also builders, but this is not strictly necessary. Pantheon gods can be worshiped in the game and grant the player special abilities like being able to recall more easily.

Pantheon gods are organized by their age, and are listed on the in-game 'gods' command by generation. Dentin was the first generation, and the later generations each came after the previous. Not many gods have been added to the pantheon in recent years.

Following the success of the advent gifts, Alter Aeon now gives players daily gifts. Gifts are a scaled back version of the advent gifts - randomly given once per day. This practice started on January 7, 2013.

Daily gifts include:

* A single practice
* Private bank / "Use a bank anywhere" time
* Experience points
* Gold
* Gambling Gold
* Storage Locker time

The boom effect occurs when a ball of lightning hits a mob and is struck by a lightning bolt. Booms do far more damage than either spell on its own. It requires at least 2 players to successfully boom a mob. A single player, even with haste, cannot.

Note that a solo mage with a lightning elemental will be able to trigger this effect, by casting counter spells to those of the elemental.

; Usage : tactics - Display known tactics

As warriors advance through their training, they may begin to notice certain
moves and combinations of attacks that work better than others. These
skills allow formal training in how to develop and use those combinations,
to make individual fighting styles more specialized and refined.

After learning the 'battle tactics' skill, warriors will begin to develop
their attack combinations. New combinations are usually discovered at
the end of a battle when the fighter has time to think and analyze what
just happened.

Mechanics
After learning the skill try to use different skills during battle and after the fight is over you may get a notification that you learned a combo. Executing tactics low will show you a screen like this:

Showing you that you know the two middle skills in the 4 part combo.

Eligible Skills
The following skills can appear in the 'tactics low' combos:
* Leap
* Lunge
* Kick
* Bash
* Charge
* Riposte
* Feint
* Taunt
* Stomp
* Pommel Strike
* Jab

Bonuses
When executing combos you get bonuses for executing long chains which temporarily boost the following stats. The bonuses can stack:
* Attacks
* Armor
* Strength
* Dexterity
* Parry
* Hitroll
* Damroll
* Dodge
* Warrior Skill Level
